Hydrogen Sulfide2022-06-25T16:49:29+00:00
The periodic symbol for hydrogen sulfide, H2S. A colourless gas that resembles the smell of rotten eggs.

WHAT IS HYDROGEN SULFIDE?

• Recognised by a distinct ‘rotten egg’ smell.

• Naturally occurring gas in groundwater sources. A consequence of sulfur consuming bacteria.

• Common in groundwater sources as there is a distinct lack of oxygen.

• Sometimes only noticeable when water is heated.

• Aesthetically unpleasant odour, although minimal impact on taste.

• Can potentially result in corrosion of metal pipework if not treated.

HOW CAN WE TREAT HYDROGEN SULFIDE?

• Various options depending on the severity.

• Some options include, chemical oxidation such as chlorination, oxidising filters, carbon filters, aeration and much more.

• Chlorination would oxidise the H2S to insoluble sulfur, this can then filtered if required. Significant maintenance required.

• Carbon filtration with oxidisation.

Oxidising filters that are regenerated using potassium permanganate. Potassium permanganate should be handled following clear safety procedures..

• Due to hydrogen sulfide being a gas, oxidation can be carried out by injecting air into the supply.

• Contact Siren Water to discuss the most appropriate treatment solution.

Sites which have old boreholes which have been out of service are commonly looking at reintroducing them due to the huge cost savings available. There are many factors which can impact the project; all being well it’s quite a straightforward project.

Please give one of our team a call on 0800 772 3227 and they’d be more than happy to assist.

I’m looking at sinking a borehole, what needs to happen?2022-03-14T11:47:32+00:00

We offer a full project management service where we work with a select few borehole drillers and are happy to manage your project. Get in touch with one of our technical team for assistance.

My water analysis has failures, how do I resolve this?2022-03-14T13:21:41+00:00

Ground and surface water can fluctuate in composition along with the fact that aged treatment systems which haven’t been serviced and maintained can result in failures. Get in touch with one of our technical support team and they’d be happy to advise what the best course of action is.

I have a borehole which I’ve inherited with the property, what should I do?2022-03-14T12:04:47+00:00

First of all, this is a fairly common occurrence. You should get a full water analysis which details the water’s chemistry. We can support with this and offer assistance on what you need to do. Reach out to one of our technical team for assistance on 0800 772 3227.
