WHAT IS IRON & MANGANESE?
• Iron and manganese are common problematic minerals in private water supplies.
• Typically iron is found in concentrations higher than manganese.
• Profiled by a strong metallic taste.
• Both can result in staining – iron a orangey / brown colour and manganese a darker blacker colour.
• Can be present in both a soluble and insoluble form.
• National requirements are < 0.2mg/l iron and <0.05 mg/l manganese.
HOW CAN WE TREAT IRON & MANGANESE?
• Treated through filtration.
• The solution depends on the pH of the water; ideally about pH 7 for iron removal and above pH 8 for manganese.
• Oxidisation may also be required to convert from soluble to insoluble states in preparation for filtration.
• Self-cleaning units will perform a scheduled daily clean .
• Are multi-media solutions which will tackle hardness, iron and manganese in single vessel however the water’s chemistry must be within a desirable range.
•Without treatment the build up of iron and manganese can block pipes and is extremely hard to break down.
FAQs
Sites which have old boreholes which have been out of service are commonly looking at reintroducing them due to the huge cost savings available. There are many factors which can impact the project; all being well it’s quite a straightforward project.

We offer a full project management service where we work with a select few borehole drillers and are happy to manage your project. Get in touch with one of our technical team for assistance.
Ground and surface water can fluctuate in composition along with the fact that aged treatment systems which haven’t been serviced and maintained can result in failures. Get in touch with one of our technical support team and they’d be happy to advise what the best course of action is.
First of all, this is a fairly common occurrence. You should get a full water analysis which details the water’s chemistry. We can support with this and offer assistance on what you need to do. Reach out to one of our technical team for assistance on 0800 772 3227.
