WHAT ARE NITRATES?
• Naturally occurring in groundwater and surface water – these levels are typically not harmful to health.
• High levels can be a result of chemical fertilisers, faecal waste or processing waste finding its way into the source.
• Can be seasonal due to rainfall spreading fertilisers into water sources.
• Affects the blood oxygen levels in the body.
• Common cause in ‘blue baby’ syndrome.
• Acceptable limits for nitrate 50mg/l NO3 & nitrite 0.5mg/l NO2.
HOW CAN WE TREAT NITRATES?
• Treated through ion exchange resins, distillation and reverse osmosis.
• Most common and cost effective treatment method is through using ion exchange resins.
• Use of selective nitrate resins.
• Removes up to 90% of nitrates.
• Self-cleaning units will perform a clean once capacity is exhausted.
• Uses sodium chloride (NaCl) to regenerate with the chloride ion being used in the regeneration process.

Ground and surface water can fluctuate in composition along with the fact that aged treatment systems which haven’t been serviced and maintained can result in failures. Get in touch with one of our technical support team and they’d be happy to advise what the best course of action is.
First of all, this is a fairly common occurrence. You should get a full water analysis which details the water’s chemistry. We can support with this and offer assistance on what you need to do. Reach out to one of our technical team for assistance on 0800 772 3227.
